First edition. 4to., 71pp., text bordered in red, 10 mounted albumen prints within red borders by John Payson Soule, captioned in red, original tissue guards, 3 wood-engravings in text, original plum cloth decorated in gilt and black, lower cover and spine faded, all edges gilt, ex-libris Zadoc Long Free Library with label to front free endpaper and card pocket to rear pastedown, remains of small label to foot of spine, a very good copy.

Note

The photographs are credited to Soule, but it is now thought that he purchased the negatives from a California photographer, possibly Edweard Muybridge, to whose work these photographs have a strong affinity.
