Second edition. 8vo, (22 x 14 cms), [2], 286, [2], pp., 7 colour plates including frontispiece, one tinted plate, 2 folding black and white plates, 6 text illustrations, one tinted folding map, front hinge slightly cracked, rear hinge repaired with tape, original blue cloth gilt, spine worn and slightly chipped at top and bottom; overall a good copy with attractive plates.

Note

The author was a consular official in Japan. This volume contains a detailed look at Japanese society at that time. It also includes a description of the journey from Yokohama, through Kawasaki, Shinagawa, into Yedo. This edition and the previous one (issued 1862) are both scarce.
