Note

Pettigrew, surgeon and antiquary, helped to establish the Philosophical Society of London, where he gave the inaugural address in 1810, 'On the Objects of Science and Literature, and the advantages arising from the establishment of Philosophical Societies.' In his capacity as surgeon to the Duchess of Kent, he vaccinated her daughter who grew up to become Queen Victoria. Gradually he became more and more involved in antiquities and this present work nicely combines his two interests.
