First edition in English, 8vo., [8], 493, [19]pp., engraved folding map by Moll, 7 engraved plates, some spotting, contemporary panelled calf, spine gilt in compartments, morocco lettering piece, worn. Provenance: Library of the earls of Macclesfield, with North Library shelf mark in manuscript.


Note

"The standard work concerning the Gold Coast of this period." (Cardinall). Bosman was Chief Factor for the Dutch at the castle of S~ao Jorge de Elmina. His work is written in the form of letters and, as well as providing an unflattering view of the "very fraudulent and crafty, idle and careless" natives, describes the forts and factories of the coast.
