Note

Hamilton, a Scottish sea captain in the service of the East India Company, traded as far as Japan, visiting, it is said, every port between the Cape and Canton. This work, the only source for information on Hamiton, provides an account of his experiences and is one of the most important first-hand histories of English merchant shipping in the Indian Ocean and East Indies.
