Note Inscribed on blank leaf: "Lindley Murray Hay / from his friend / James Backhouse / York / 1846." The author started his travels in Mauritius and then journeyed to the Cape in 1838 from where he travelled constantly throughout South Africa visiting numerous missions, hospitals and towns. He appears to have visited every prominent missionary in the country. "There is a good description of Kaffraria, and of the Basuto, Griqua and Bechuna countries and the account of the Cape Colony provides valuable information concerning the first part of the nineteenth century." (Mendelssohn). |
