Note The presentation inscription reads "To Hubert Leigh Bennett Esqr & Mrs Leigh Bennett. / from Edward Lear. Sanremo, April / the twenty tooth. 1879" and beneath his name on the title, the author has added a list six of his other books. A fine author's presentation copy of the first edition of this charming work in which the great landscape artist (and author of the famous Nonsense Rhymes) illustrates and describes "the nature of the landscape in those portions of Corsica in which ... [he] travelled" (preface). San Remo was Lear's base during later life, the climate suited his weak constitution, and it was a useful starting point for his various painting expeditions. |
