First edition in English. 8vo, [16], 325, [3 (blank)],[14 (catalogue of books)] pp. Contemporary marbled calf with blindstamped panel decoration, spine gilt in compartments, paper flaw with associated tear in E4, hinges cracked but holding firmly, spine and gilt rubbed, else very good. Provenance: Earls of Macclesfield (armorial bookplate and blindstamp).


Note

Amelot de La Houssaie (1634-1706) was secretary to an embassy from the French court to the Republic of Venice. His critical account of the administration led to his incarceration in the Bastille.
