Note

The English edition of Thunberg's famous journey to South Africa, Indonesia, Java, Japan and Ceylon. He was a pupil of Linneaus and eventually succeeded him. "His narrative affords considerable information respecting the natural history of the country together with notes on the Hottentots, Kaffirs, and slaves, and general remarks on the state of the Cape at this period ... his botanical notes being of special value." (Mendelssohn) The attractive plates depict African and Japanese weaponry amongst other subjects.
