"In 1888 Nansen tested the innovation of using skis to cross Greenland, a risk widely seen as madness; despite many difficulties and delays he and five others successfully reached the west coast in time to winter at Godthab. Among other things, he was able to demonstrate that the Greenland icecap extended far to the north" (Books on Ice).
