Note

"An excellent work of exploration and adventure" (Czech). Following the suppression of Mahdism at Omdurman, Austin, a well regarded young officer who had been serving in Uganda, was employed in carrying out two important surveying expeditions. He was to penetrate and map "those unexplored regions that lie between the Egyptian and Abyssinian boundaries." The first route took him through the Sobat region, from Fashoda on the White Nile to Goré at the far extent of the Sobat River; the second from Omdurman to Mombasa via Lake Rudolph. Austin's first book and an elusive one.
