Note From Smirdin's library: a fine copy of the rare first publication of Plenck in Russian and one of the earliest medical works in vernacular. A professor of surgery and obstetrics in Hungary, Plenck (1735-1807) became secretary of the Imperial (Austrian) Academy of Medicine and was one of the leading authorities of the finishing century. He introduced the use of gloves for the childbirth of syphilitic mothers, was a pioneer in the use of mercury in the treatment of venereal diseases, published a celebrated illustrated census of medicinal plants and is sometimes considered as the first dermatologue. This explains his success in Russia, where eight of his works were published according to the Svodnyy Katalog. Rare: SK records 5 copies in Russian institutions, while we could not trace any copy in Europe and North America. No copy either at auction in the last 30 years. |
