Note Dallaway spent 18 months as chaplain with Liston's embassy to the Porte (1794-6). He travelled to Constantinople overland with Liston's entourage, which included John Sibthorp, author of Flora Graeca, and Gaetano Mercati who became Liston's draughtsman. Dallaway and J.B.S. Morritt travelled through the Troad, together with Mercati. Both Dallaway's and Morritt's works use Mercati's drawings, though they have only one in common. Morritt's book, A Vindication of Homer, appeared in 1798, and it is useful to see the two works as companion pieces. (Blackmer). |
