Annotated by an officer of the bengal army. Rare. The Bengal Directory contains details of the 'British and Indian Governments', 'Supreme Court British India', 'Her Majesty's Forces in India',etc., for the year 1834. Furthermore, the register also includes a 'Commercial List' containing artists, banks, merchants, apothecary's, carvers and gilders, as well as a list of the principal Calcutta presses.
This copy contains inscriptions throughout by John Dunn of the 54th Regiment, updating the printed lists with notes updating the status of his fellow officers, most requently marking them as "Retired" or "Deceased". John Dunn himself appears in print on pp. 103, 121, 194 and 207.
First edition, 8vo (202 x 120 mm), half-title, folding map of India hand-coloured in outline, 3 folding tables, ink ownership inscription to head of title, a few ink annotations to the text in the same contemporary hand, contemporary half calf, rubbed.
