This publication is based on a smaller 1986 Victoria & Albert Museum exhibition catalogue, only published in wrappers. Between 1956-61 Roger Mayne photographed extensively in North Kensington around Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove. This book is centred around Mayne's photographs of life in Southam Street, London W10, a street that was declared unfit for human habitation in 1963 and was largely demolished by 1969. Mayne and his photographs were an inspiration for Colin MacInnes's 1959 novel Absolute Beginners.
First edition thus; 4to (270 × 210 mm, n10¾ x 8¼ in); black-and-white photographs printed in offset, texts by Zelda Cheatle and Michael Mack, Mark Haworth-Booth, and recollections of Southam Street by 10 former residents, minor r=toning to margins; white endpapers, binder's glue showing on pastedowns as often, minor toning to margins, black cloth-covered boards, black-and-white photo-illustrated dust-jacket, white, text in black, light shelfwear, near-fine; pp.87, [1].
