CHARLES VI, Holy Roman Emperor.

Chez Augustus Graet, Ghent, 1719. Folio, engraved allegorical title by M. Baeylbrouck, after B.van Volxsam, printed by A. Praet, title and heading on page 3 printed in red and black, woodcut imperial arms on title, 32pp., 6 large engraved folding plates, some clean tears repaired with no loss, some slight marginal staining and isolated spots, contemporary mottled roan, joints strengthened, spine gilt in compartments, edges of cover restored, GILT ARMS OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR on upper cover, ARMS OF CITY OF GHENT on lower cover.
A FINE 'LIVRE DE FETES' ILLUSTRATED WITH THREE STRIKING FIREWORK PLATES. The work relates the inauguration of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI as Count of Flanders. A particular attraction of this work are the three fine firework plates. Kevin Salatino, in his recent Incendiary Art, included an illustration of Michael Heylbroeck's etching of the four pyramids which were in the market place of Ghent on Friday, the fireworks in the Grand Place, and also Harrewijnn's illuminations at the Hotel de Ville. He cites these as examples of the sensation of detachment from ordinary time and space that characterises these highly focussed images (close up and cropped), where the intrusion of the real world is reduced to a minimum, a logical outcome of the actual physical isolation of the theaters. Landwehr, Splendid Ceremonies, 198; Salatino, Incendiary Art, pp. 33-34.
