Owen Jones made a journey through Greece, Alexandria, Cairo, Thebes and Constantinople in 1833. During this Eastern journey he was deeply impressed by Arabic form and ornament, and his future work as a designer was greatly influenced thereby. In 1834 he went to Granada, and made numerous drawings of the Alhambra, revisiting the palace in 1837. Jones spared no pains to publish this fine work, selling a Welsh property to enable him to do so. The book launched Jones' career as an artist and is one of the monuments of early chromolithography. It must be regarded as his greatest work and a fitting successor to the great work on Moorish architecture by Murphy. Abbey Travel 156; Palau 106445; Brunet III, 564.
