R. Ackermann, London 1816. First edition. Large 4to., illustrated with 48 finely hand-coloured aquatint plates, offsetting from plates to text, light soiling to title, later red half morocco gilt, neatly rebacked preserving spine, a very handsome copy.
This was the fifth of Ackermann's "sumptuously illustrated volumes of English topography". The finest pictorial record of the nine most famous schools in England, the artists include Pugin, Nash and Westall while the engraving was carried out by such masters of aquatint as Stadler, Buck, Havell among others.
