Miller, London, 1803. Large 4to (36 x 28 cm). [9] ll. including French and English title pages, dedications, prefaces and tables of contents, and 73 handcoloured aquatint plates numbered and engraved by J. Dadley each with two pages of accompanying text in both English and French, text and plates watermarked 1796, original tissue guards; one plate slightly shorter, light occasional spotting. Contemporary dark green straight-grained morocco, covers with gilt floral and Greek key borders, flat spine richly gilt in compartment, gilt lettering to one, gilt roulette to board edges and turn-ins, gilt edges, marbled endpapers; slightly rubbed at extremities.

Beautifully bound copy of the first issue of this popular work, with plates and text watermarked 1796. As the preface explains, this title was the third in the series of costume book issued by William Miller, after Turkey and China. The costumes were drawn after Georgi and Mueller, the English text was written by William Alexander, after the main texts available at the time on Russia: Pallas, Chappe d'Auteroche, Krashenenikov, Sauer...
