Colour Plate & Illustrated
WERNER, Carl
Nilbilder auf seiner Reise durch Aegypten nach der Natur aufgenommen.
Dorling, Hamburg, c.1872. First edition. DELUXE ISSUE. Large landscape folio (61 x 45 cm approx.). The complete set of 24 chromolithographs produced by G.W. Seitz using his patented method of water-colour facsimile, mounted on card as issued, descriptive letterpress for each plate, spotting to text and to a lesser extent to mounts, contemporary maroon half morocco gilt, a little rubbed and soiled.
Werner was a professor at the Academy of Leipzig. He travelled through Egypt in 1870 and this collection of lithographs is the result of that journey. The Blackmer copy, in a portfolio, consisted of the images alone. The images are vivid and powerful and as well as the usual scenes of pyramids and tombs, there are also depictions of street life, coffee houses, barber shop, etc. Cf. Blackmer 1947 (London edition); cf Hilmy II, 324 (ordinary small-format edition).
