Folio (42.5 x 30cm. approx.), v, 117pp., 4 pages ads at end, wear to fore-edge of title with neat repairs, chromolithograph title, 25 plates all mounted on card as issued within gilt borders, captions and imprints below, original maroon pebbled grained cloth gilt, upper cover with gilt boder enclosing large green cloth centre-panel with gilt pictorial naval motifs, spine gilt lettered eithin large gilt panel, all edges gilt.
A fine de luxe copy of this beautifully-produced record of the history of submarine telegraphy in general and the trans-Atlantic telegraph in particular, culminating in the first voyage using the S.S. 'Great Eastern' in 1865. The present work was issued in two forms: the regular issue with tinted plates and the present de luxe issue on large paper with the plates hand-coloured and mounted. This latter issue is greatly superior.
