London, printed by E.M. for Chr. Coningsby. 1707. . Fifth edition. 4to (16.5 x 21.5cm) [18], 136,129-264pp., with an engraved portrait and nine engraved calligraphic plates, an excellent, unsophisticated copy in contemporary calf, crack to front joint.

This comprehensive guide to mercantile activities and finance management includes methods of practical arithmetic and book-keeping as well as tables and guidelines for foreign currency and bills of exchange. First published in 1695, clearly it was produced with international commerce in mind.Chapter XII. "sheweth the product or commodities produced by all the countries in the world, with the chief towns of trade and bigness of the country, compared with England". We discover that "Russia, or Muscovy produceth chiefly, fine leather, furrs, martins, sables ... Turkey in Asia produceth, raw silk, cotton-wool, druggs, as opium, gauls, ruburb ... China and Tonquin, produceth chiefly gold, silver, precious stones, proceline dishes, China-ware ... America produceth chiefly ... Whale Oyl, stock-fish ...tobacco, furrs, indigo ..." and so on. Hatton supplies a list of the rates for posting letters abroad and also provides a mercantile dictionary with many foreign trading terms. The nine finely engraved calligraphic plates included in the work are a charming addition, with birds and fish incorporated into the examples of calculations. This edition not in Kress or Goldsmiths'.
