The editor John Gordon noticed Giles' works while he was working for the Reynolds News and convinced him to do cartoons for the Daily & Sunday Express. With his ability to "see the fun" and subtly mock political events in a way that made him laugh, Gordon called Giles "a spreader of happiness." The first series deals mainly with the final years of the Second World War, and the cartoons featuring Hitler et al. are particularly noteworthy and hilarious.
