SALTEN, Felix.

Bambi: A Life in the Woods. Translated from the German by Whittaker Chambers. With a forward by John Galsworthy.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1928. First English language edition, 8vo., 223pp., black and white chapter openers, two-colour pictorial endpapers, recent tan morocco by the Cottage Bindery, Bath, upper cover with border of gilt floral roll and gilt vignette of Bambi and mother in centre, top edge gilt, house in a tan cloth slipcase, a lovely copy.

Originally published in Germany in 1923, this children's classic was later banned by the Nazis. Translated into English and published in close succession in the US and the UK (the priority between the two is unclear), the work became an instant success even before the teary Disney film version was released in 1942. A handsome pictorial binding preserves this excellent copy of a childhood favorite.
