GRASS, Günter.

Die Vorzüge der Windhühner.

Luchterhand, Berlin, 1956. First edition. 8vo. A collection of poems with illustrations by the author (who was trained as an illustrator and lithographer). Original cream self-wrappers, illustrated and printed in black. A lovely copy of this fragile item and very scarce.

Grass who sees himself as a "sad optimist" won the 1999 Nobel Prize for Literature. His first novel, 'Die Blechtrommel' (The Tin Drum) published in 1959, three years after his first volume of prose and poetry, marked the beginning of a prolific and often controversial career.
