Although the play had already been shown in New York at the beginning of the year the London show opened in May 1950. By now Eliot had acquired celebrity status which he enjoyed (he featured on the cover of Time Magazine on 6 March). The play closed in February of the following year having had a moderate success. Two years later a televised version reached an audience of around 3.5 million people. Still Eliot was not particularly pleased as he felt ambivalent towards the medium. Gallup A55.
