The first book of her House of Earth trilogy, The Good Earth not only received a Pulitzer but also contributed significantly to Pearl Buck's receipt of a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938. She was only the second woman to win this honour, and the first American woman. After its initial stage adaptation in 1933, the story continued its prize-winning ways and earned Luise Rainer an Oscar for her film portrayal of O-Lan.
