PLATH, Sylvia.
Ariel.
Faber and Faber, London, 1965. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's crimson cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Original yellow dustwrapper printed in blue and dark red, corners a little bumped, some wear to edges, especially to spine ends and tips, spine slightly tanned and creased. A very good copy of the collection of poems which include Lady Lazarus, Daddy, Nick and the Candlestick, and the stark and beautiful Poppies in October and Poppies in July.
When published the Ariel poems created quite a stir on both sides of the Atlantic, not least because of its dark energy and forceful imagery. Plath brilliantly and courageously fuses the personal with the universal, and perhaps the most famous, still, of the Ariel poems are "Lady Lazarus" - "Out of the ash/ I rise with my red hair/ And I eat men like air", and "Daddy" - "There's a stake in your fat black heart..."
