[BIBLE, ENGLISH, KING JAMES VERSION.]
The Holy Bible ... with notes, by... Thomas Wilson, D.D...
Bath: R. Cruttwell, 1785. 3 volumes, 4to (32 x 24 cm); contemporary red crushed morocco by Kalthoeber (stamp on reverse of front free endpaper), light spotting to the preliminaries, covers with an elaborate wide border incorporating a vine framing a central panel incorporating 8 gilt roundels, spines in six compartments, gilt lettering and floral tooling, elaborate dentelles and outer edges, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, some wear to extremities. A fine set. Provenance: Lord Rendlesham (armorial bookplate), other previous owner's bookplate to rear pastedown.
This elegant edition bears the binder's stamp of Christian Kalthoeber. Like the other German binders of the late eighteenth century, Kalthoeber emigrated from Germany to England where elaborate morocco bindings were in greater fashion. After succeeding Baumgarten in 1782, Kalthoeber came to be known as the greatest binder of his day. An unusual feature of this copy is the inclusion of 3 Maccabees in the Apocrypha. This chapter had not appeared in an English Bible since 1551. Herbert 1302.
