A very scarce, finely executed series of lithographs of thorough-bred horses from around the world. The horses are set against backgrounds and often feature riders or handlers, giving the images a sense of movement and power. Two of the most striking images are of the English race horse, and that of the Arab horse. Kuntz was a well-known equestrian artist who travelled extensively in Germany, Hungary, France, and England, where he gathered material for the present work. D'Alton had earlier published the "Naturgeschichte des Pferdes" between 1810 and 1816. The son of an Irish officer in the Austrian service, he was appointed Professor of Natural History at the University of Bonn in 1818, where he later introduced the teaching of the history of art. Amongst his pupils was Karl Marx. Nissen ZBI 2327.
