[MILITARY UNIFORMS] - PIRATSKIY, K[arl] K[arlovich] (artist).

[Uniforms of the Russian Imperial Army].

St. Petersburg, [ca. 1865]. A collection of 26 chromolithograph plates folio (ca. 48.5 x 36 cm) after Piratskiy, each with date and caption in Russian and French; occasional light soiling. Bound by Aquarius in period style burgundy half morocco gilt over marbled boards, spine with raised bands and two green morocco labels lettered in gilt.

FINE COLOUR PLATES, WITH WIDE MARGINS, OF IMPERIAL UNIFORMS, showing mainly infantry and cavalry officers in camp and city parade uniforms ("Gorodskaya paradnaya form", or "Grande tenue de ville"). They were all drawn by Piratskiy (1815-1871), a court painter, member of the Imperial Academy, responsible for some of the most ambitious print projects of the time (including the famous I'storicheskoe opisanie odezhdy... Rossiyskikh voysk', begun by Viskovatov). These plates were printed by the best lithographic presses of St. Petersburg: the French firm Lemercier, D'Arleng (Redaktsiya Voen. Khroniki) and the Museum Glavnogo Intendantskogo Upravleniya, employing among others Konrad, Baryshev and Fernlund as chromolithographers. Cf. Colas 2397, Hiller p.611.
