[Mikhail Slezka], Lvov, 1690. Folio (30.5 x 19.3 cm). Title within woodcut border, 5 full-page woodcuts by Evstafii Zavadelvov dated 1681-83, woodcut illustrations in the text, headpieces and initials, printed in red and black; slightly soiled and dampstained, a few tears. Contemporary green vellum over paper boards, the upper cover applied with a brass Crucifix amid stars with cornerpieces of the Evangelists, the lower cover with stud cornerpieces, brass clasps, edges gauffered and gilt; slightly worn and loose. Provenance: Hauck Collection, USA (bookplate on front pastedown).
BEAUTIFUL UKRAINIAN BINDING OF THE END OF THE 17TH CENTURY, protecting Gospels printed in Lvov. This binding was part of the Hauck collection, celebrated for its unusual and well-preserved items. The work includes a fine full-page woodcut of the Dormition of the Mother of God at the verso of the title page.
