OLIPHANT, Laurence
The Russian Shores of the Black Sea in the Autumn of 1852 with a Voyage down the Volga, and a Tour through the Country of the Don Cossacks.
William Blackwood, London, 1854. Third edition, revised and enlarged. 8vo, lithographed frontispiece, folding map, map of the Crimea, wood-engraved illustrations in text, contemporary green calf marbled boards, red morocco label.
In 1852 Oliphant started out to visit St. Petersburg, thence to Nijni-Novgorod (depicted in frontispiece), and ultimately to the Crimea. This is an account of part of that journey. The approach of the Crimean war gave a special interest to this work and Lord Raglan applied to Oliphant for information. He was also engaged as a journalist on the Daily News as a result.
