OLIPHANT, Laurence.
The Russian shores of the Black Sea in the Autumn of 1852 with a voyage down the Volga, and a tour through the country of the Don Cossacks.
William Blackwood, London 1853. First edition. 8vo., xii, [ii], 366pp., 8 pages ads at end, lithographed frontispiece, 2 maps (1 folding), wood-engraved illustrations in text, original blind-stamped cloth gilt, an excellent copy.
In 1852 Oliphant started out to visit St. Petersburg, thence to Nizhni-Novgorod (depicted in frontispiece), and ultimately to the Crimea. This is an account of part of that journey. The approach of the Crimean war gave a special interest to this work and Lord Raglan applied to Oliphant for information. He was also engaged as a journalist on the Daily News as a result.
