PINKERTON, Robert.
Russia: or, miscellaneous observations on the past and present state of that country and its inhabitants.
R. Watts for Seeley & Sons and Hatchard & Son, London, 1833. Tall 8vo (23.5 x 14.5cm). Title-[8]-486-[2] pp., with 8 hand-coloured lithograph plates; occasional spotting at beginning. Contemporary polished half-calf over marbled boards, blindstamped roll to covers, spine with raised bands gilt- and blindstamped, brown morocco label lettered in gilt; recased, rebacked, slightly rubbed at extremities.
In contrast to more conventional costume plates, this work shows the people described leading their everyday lives, for example in a national dance, playing a moujik game, spending time with their children, and enjoying village amusements, an entire family dangerously on a see-saw. The text deals with all aspects of religious life in Russia, and all the various sects and religions practiced. A very good copy of the first edition. Abbey Travel 230; Colas 2395; Lipperheide Kaa 49.
