Ilin, including one printed in colour, the others with hand-colouring. Wrappers, including original printed upper wrapper, housed in a modern cloth box; slightly soiled, upper wrapper repaired in margins, rebacked. Provenance: UK War Office Library (stamp on title dated 21.02.1962 with a letter of internal use to verso of front wrapper).
FIRST EDITION, COMPLETE AND IN FINE CONDITION, OF THE RARE ATLAS ON THE EXTENSION OF THE CRIMEAN WAR IN THE CAUCASUS, WRITTEN BY THE HERO OF KARS. General Muravev (1794-1866) was appointed governor of Caucasus and commander-in-chief of the local troops. He lead them to a 6-month siege of Kars against the Turks, eventually successful. This major victory allowed Russia to exchange Kars against Sebastopol at the end of the war and gave Muravev his nickname: 'Muravev-Karskiy'. The present atlas includes explanatory military maps of the region, portraits of the main actors including the General Williams, and many fine views of Kars and the surroundings, showing the city citadel, Caucasus mounts and military camps. It was posthumously published by Anatoliy Demidov together with a 2-volume text. The only book Muravev published during his lifetime was the celebrated 'Journey to Turkmen and Khiva'.
