KUPFFER, A[dolf] Th[eodor von].

Voyage dans l'Oural, entrepris en 1828.

Firmin Didot Fr'eres, Paris, 1833. 8vo (ca. 21.5 x 13.5 cm). ix, 428 pp., with tables in text and 3 folding maps, one by Hermann, two with hand-colouring, all lithographed by Engelmann; rare marginal spotting. Modern black morocco-backed marbled boards, spine with raised bands lettered in gilt, original wrappers bound in, uncut; wrappers repaired in margins and laid down.

FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, UNCUT WITH ORIGINAL WRAPPERS BEARING A DEDICATION FROM THE AUTHOR to General Bazaine. Kupffer, physician and geologist, was member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. In 1828, the Russian government sent him to explore the Ural mountains, where he discovered many mineral sites unknown yet. The present works accounts for his travel, his disciveries and his rich observations and scientifc conclusions on temperatures, climate, vegetation, soil composition and also the industrial production of iron and other metals. VERY RARE WITH THE COLOURED MAPS, of scientific interest and printed on strong, fresh paper. They are: - 'Carte routi'ere de la Russie centrale' dated 1833, with a 'coupe géognostique de l'Oural' - 'Carte de l'Oural ou d'une partie des gouvernements de Perme et d'Orenbourg, dans laquelle les dépôts de sables aurifi'eres sont indiqués ' dated 1833, and - 'Carte pétrographique de l'arrondissement de Slatoouste' by Hermann, also dated 1833. The present copy bears a good Russian association: indeed, Kupffer was in St. Petersburg the colleague of Pierre-Dominique Bazaine (1786-1836), a general in Russia, but also a mathematician and the father of Francois-Achille Bazaine, a celebrated French marshal. Brunet III, 702 note.
