Brieff and Weygand, Paris, St. Petersburg and Leipzig, 1835. 8vo (20.6 x 13 cm). xi-744 pp., including half-title and title, with 3 plans lithographed by Thierry Freres, including 2 folding; occasionnal slight spotting. Contemporary polished green calf-backed marbled boards, spine with raised bands tooled in gilt and blind, black morocco label lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges; slightly rubbed at extremities, upper front joint splitting.

Good copy of the first edition of this thorough study of the Russian Empire under Nicholas I. Schnitzler (1802-1871) wrote several books on Russia and focused in the present one on a precise description of its provinces, cities and peoples, extending from the Ural to Poland and Turkey, including the Baltic peoples, Finland, the Ukraine and Tartary. It contains many interesting statistics and observations, and shows the plans of St. Petersburg, Moscow and, more unusually, of the marketplace of Nizhniy-Novogorod. Brunet V, 212, note;
