CHANTREAU, [Pierre-Nicolas].

Philosophical, political, and literary travels in Russia, during the years 1788 & 1789.

R. Morison for R. Morison and Son, and Vernor and Hood, Perth and London, 1794. 2 volumes in 1, 8vo (20.6 x 12 cm). With a folding engraved map, 3 engraved plates; occasional spotting and offsetting. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine with gilt fillets and green morocco label elegantly lettered in gilt; joints and extremities neatly repaired.

A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, published in Perth the same year as the original French "Voyage philosophique politique et litteraire". Far more than a simple travel account, Chantreau's important work is a full survey of Russia at the end of the reign of Catherine the Great, including physical descriptions, economic considerations, statistical figures and sociological observations. The engraved map in English, in excellent condition, shows Western Russia and the plates include an interpretation of the famous monument to Peter the Great in St. Petersburg. Crowther 2075; Boucher de la Richarderie II, 18.
