Fine copy of the first edition of this broad survey of the Caucasus, published on the eve of the extension of the Crimean War to that region. It includes geographical, historical and ethnographical descriptions, with specific chapters on Armenia and Daghestan. An exiled Russian, Golovin defended peace in the region through several works, including the present one where a subchapter is entitled "War in the Caucasus endless".
