LANDER, Richard and John.

Journal of an expedition to explore the course and termination of the Niger; with a narrative of a voyage down that river to its termination.

Harper, New York 1832. First U.S. edition, 2 volumes, small 8vo., xiv, 384; vii, 337pp., 18 pages ads vol. i, 2 pages ads vol. ii, 2 engraved portrait frontispieces, 3 engraved plates, 2 maps (1 large folding), wood-engravings in text including 1 full-page, scattered light foxing, inoffensive light waterstain vol. ii, uncut, modern blue full morocco gilt, a very good set.

Richard Lander accompanied Clapperton on his second expedition and was his devoted attendant until Clapperton's death in 1827. Lander, together with his brother, who provided the illustrations for this work, landed in 1830 in the Gulf of Guinea at Badagri and travelled inland to meet the Niger at Bussa. This account of their journey includes a hazardous canoe trip downstream before they were captured by Ibo tribesmen and held to ransom; one of the great African narratives.
