[MELVILLE, Mrs. Helen Elizabeth]

A residence at Sierra Leone described from a journal kept on the spot, and from letters written to friends at home. By a Lady. Edited by the Hon. Mrs. Norton.

Murray, London 1849. First edition. 8vo., xii, 335pp., contemporary half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, lightly rubbed, an excellent copy.

Most of this account is centred around the climate of West Africa, "the most unhealthy quarter of the globe." Most of the European women either died or left fever-stricken for home but Mrs. Melville stuck it out with her husband and two children, one of whom was born there. The period covered is from 1842-45. Robinson p289.
