JOHNSTON, H[arry] H[amilton].

The River Congo, from its mouth to Bólóbó; with a general description of the natural history and anthropology of its Western Basin.

Sampson, Low, London 1884. First edition. 8vo., xvii, 470pp., etched frontispiece, title vignette, 2 etched plates, numerous other illustrations some full-page, 3 maps (2 folding, slightly torn), full green polished calf gilt, (school prize binding), gilt stamp to upper cover, spine gilt in compartments, tan morocco lettering piece, Hosken copy with bookplate, a very good copy.

Johnston says in his preface that this work is not intended as a narrative of great pioneering exploration, this having been done by others before him such as Stanley, nor of scientific research, the author not being qualified to do so, but rather a guide-book for would-travellers to the region or "stay-at-homes" who are interested in the subject.
