The first book to be illustrated with actual stereographic photos. The object of the experiment was to see how far astronomical observations can be improved by eliminating the lower part of the atmosphere. To this end a telescope and other apparatus were carried up the volcanic flanks of the volcano to height of between 8900 and 10700 feet. The photographs were taken during the the ascent at different points. These were printed under the superintendence of James Glaisher.
