English, a Harvard graduate, was commissioned in the marines through the influence of John Quincy Adams. Putting in to Alexandria in 1820 he became infatuated with the East, left the marines, converted to Islam and entered Mohammed Ali's service under the name Mohammed Effendi. English joined Mohammed Ali's expeditionary force for the invasion of Sudan under Ali's son Ismail. He was put in charge of the artillery and eventually reached Senaar, the expeditionary force having defeated the Sudanese tribesmen at Korti. Blackmer 553 (later U.S. edition); Hilmy I, 222.
