JOHNSTON, H[arry] H[amilton]

The River Congo, from its mouth to Bólóbó; with a general description of the natural history and anthropology of its western basin

Sampson, Low, London 1884. Third edition. 8vo., WITH THE BOOKPLATE AND STAMP OF H.M. STANLEY, xvii, 470pp., etched frontispiece, 3 maps (2 folding, 1 with piece cut away), 2 etchings, numerous attractive illustrations throughout by the author, some very minor spotting on a few pages of text, otherwise internally clean, original decorated black cloth neatly rebaked preseving most of original spine, morocco-backed folding box.

An evocative association copy, the master's copy of his pupil's work. Johnston says in his preface that this work is not intended as a narrative of great pioneering exploration, this having been done by others before him such as Stanley, nor of scientific research, the author not being qualified to do so, but rather a guide-book for would-travellers to the region or "stay-at-homes" who are interested in the subject.
