BARROW, John

An account of travels into the interior of southern Africa, in the years 1797 and 1798: including cursory observations on the geology and geography of the southern part of that continent; the natural history of such objects as occurred in the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms; and sketches of the physical and moral characters of the various tribes of inhabitants surrounding the settlement of the Cape of Good Hope. To which is annexed, a description of that extensive colony.


Cadell, London 1801. First edition, 2 vols, 4to. With 9 folding maps, plans and charts, of which 3 coloured, folding sepia aquatint frontispiece vol II, slight foxing to the maps, contemporary polished calf gilt, corners rubbed, book plate, spines gilt in compartments, raised bands, green labels, joints repaired, overall an excellent copy.

Although perhaps better known for his accounts of China and the Arctic, this is Barrow's first travel book. He went to the Cape of Good Hope as private secretary to Lord Macartney. " He traversed every part of the colony, and visited the several countries of the Keffirs, the Hottentots, and the Bosjesmen, performing " a journey exceeding one thousand miles on horseback, on foot, and very rarely in a covered wagon, and full half the distance as a pedestrian, and never except for a few nights sleeping under a roof " " .
