BURTON, Richard Francis; Verney Lovett Cameron.
To the Gold Coast for gold. A personal narrative
Chatto, London 1883. First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., half-titles to both volumes, [xiv], 354; vi, 381pp., coloured lithograph frontispiece, 2 folding maps, 3 illustrations in text, tear to page 205 vol. ii, blue half morocco gilt, spines in six compartments, gilt lettered direct in second and third, others with gilt centre piece, a very good set.
In 1875 Cameron had completed the first crossing of Central Africa, explored the Kong Mountains and searched for gold in the Ancoba River Valley. Through their shared interest in gold, Burton and Cameron were commissioned by James Irvine of the Guinea Coast Gold Mining Co. to survey and report on his mining concessions. Although they did, indeed, find gold and Burton recommended a way of extracting it, their report was passed over for that of a less enthusiastic career. Penzer pp106-107.
