The author was British consul in the Bight of Biafra. The book is the first narrative of the expedition up the Niger commanded by William Baikie, on board the Pleiad, an iron screw steamer rigged as a schooner and sent by Macgregor Laird to establish trading outposts on the Niger and to search for Heinrich Barth.
