Very scarce. The expedition was part of the attempt by Portugal to establish sovereignty over a corridor linking the territories of Angola and Mozambique. It forms a companion to the account of Serpa Pinto, who set out on his own expedition after parting in disagreement with Capello and Ivens. The two expeditions complement each other nicely: Serpa Pinto crossed the continent from Benguella to Natal, tracing part of the Kwando and traversing the eastern part of Bechuanaland, adding much to the knowledge of the river system to the south-east of Bihe. Capello and Ivens struck north form Bihe, and examined part of the Kwango and a large area in the north of Angola. See: Baker, History of geograhical discovery, p343.
